In [year], the Estonian National Museum, in collaboration with photographer Johannes Pääsuke, organized a major photo expedition during which Pääsuke took 317 photographs. 110 years later, in early 2021, Luca Berti, an Italian photographer living and working in Denmark, contacted the Setomaa Museums and expressed his desire to repeat such an expedition through Setomaa. Luca Berti’s photographs of Setomaa were taken between 2016 and 2024, taking the time to get to know each place and person, traveling primarily by bicycle—just as his source of inspiration, Johannes Pääsuke, did over 100 years ago—and shooting with an analog camera onto large-format film. Luca Berti: “These days, photography is more like a hunt—you shoot 3,000 pictures in a row. For me, photography is still comparable to painting. I’d rather take just a few photos, but I take my time to observe the light and composition.” The book is organized according to the nulkad of Setomaa and contains nearly 300 photographs by Luca Berti, which provide an overview of all the nulkad located within Estonian territory. Each nulga is accompanied by a map in the Seto language and accompanying texts published in Estonian, Seto, and English. The inside cover features a map of Setomaa with place names in the Seto language. Luca Berti is a freelance photographer from Florence who has lived and worked in Denmark for over 20 years. He graduated from the Italian Institute of Photography in Milan, worked as a fashion photographer from 2000 to 2012, and since 2012 has been dedicated to a documentation project depicting rural life in the Nordicand Baltic countries. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Finland, Italy, Germany, and Estonia.
</oembed>
