Everyday Life in Estonia: A Journey into the Modern World

28.00 €

The book tells the story of how Estonians have transformed from medieval peasants into modern Europeans over the past 150 years. The modern era and the modern world have made us live by the clock, taught us about privacy, and made us more individualistic. Many things only recently became common practice here: studies conducted by sanitary topographers in the 1920s confirmed that, in general, people lived in the old way and knew very little about modern hygiene. Faces and bodies were washed once a week, as had been customary among the peasantry elsewhere in Europe. Homes were cleaned even less frequently. Even a cursory glance confirms that the 20th century has fundamentally changed the lives and way of being of Estonians.
