This book is a useful guide both while exploring the museum and later when reflecting on your memories.
The foundation for the valuable collection of Estonian vernacularwas established with the founding of the Estonian Open-Air Museum on May 22, 1957.
The museum is divided into four historical regions: Western Estonia, Northern Estonia, Southern Estonia, and the islands. The presentation of each region is based on the distinctive features of the local landscape, village types, and road networks. Naturally, the village scenes here include not only farmhouses but also a church, a tavern, a schoolhouse, a village store, and a fire station. While in the museum’s early years the main focus was on older, primarily 18th–19th-century rural architecture, the open-air museum’s temporal scope has since expanded significantly. Increasing emphasis is being placed on depicting everyday life, with a significant focus on creating historical landscaping and preserving heritage plants.
